Behavior change is a science.
Pavlok is all about you creating good habits and getting rid of bad habits, so that you can become the person you want to be. So, why does this approach work?
First of all, it’s important to know that, when it comes to creating habits, consistency is a key element. The more you use the Pavlok wearable, the more it can help that certain, necessary procedures become a routine and in the end will become easier. When you have reached the point that it is more difficult to actually not do a certain procedure anymore, you can assume that you created a habit.
The great, ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC) once said:
“We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.”
There seems to be a lot of truth in these words, and there are many examples of people who prove the validity of this statement: entrepreneurs, politicians, every day people who reach important goals,… Many of them reached great goals by applying a process of consistency, a plan backed by desire, commitment/persistence, and by also applying rewards along the way for reaching milestones (some people actually work better with a system of punishment, that’s why Pavlok also contains this option).
When it comes to breaking a bad habit, negative stimuli in connection with a bad habit will ensure that a negative association with the bad habit will be created. Let’s take the example of smoking: Every time you are about to light a cigarette, you get an electric shock through the Pavlok wearable. Very soon you will associate smoking with something rather unpleasant: pain. Chances are high that this will help you to reduce the amount of cigarettes you smoke, ideally getting down to zero.
The Pavlok App ecosystem helps to create good habits and to get rid of bad habits. While the fear of shock gets you there, the positive reinforcement (e.g. through winning money) keeps you there.
Once you start to succeed, Pavlok will transition into the positive reinforcement phase: it congratulates you, it notifies your friends about your success, it showcases your consistency.
Here’s a short video that was used during the crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo in October 2014, and which gives a good idea about the science of how Pavlok works:
Pavlok doesn’t just track what you do. It transforms who you are.
Change is hard, but not impossible.
